McKinney Primary School, Dundrod is a Controlled Primary School, which is situated approximately 2 miles from Nutts Corner, 8 miles from Lisburn and 9 miles from Antrim. Dundrod Primary School has provided education in the area from 1847. Rebuilt in 1994, it was renamed McKinney Primary School, Dundrod. Due to growing numbers, an extension was built in 2005. We are very fortunate to have a Nursery Unit as an integral part of the school, which opened in 2000. We are very lucky to have an extensive site, in rural setting, which provides an excellent environment for primary education.
In recent years its pupils have been drawn from both the local area and the wider community. The children currently enrolled are from Dundrod, the scattered rural community.
In September 2015, enrolment stands at 132 with an additional 26 full time pupils in the Nursery Unit. Some classes in McKinney Primary School are composite, that is, they are formed by putting together children of two different years. Within classes, a variety of appropriate organisational strategies are employed including ability groupings, mixed ability groupings, peer and random groups, whole class teaching and individual work. This variety enables the teacher to adopt the most effective and efficient form of learning environment. In the 2015 - 2016 year we have 6 classes which includes two composite classes. Our classes this year are Nursery, P1, P2, P3/4, P4/5, P6 and P7. Classes range from 14-28.
We have a Principal, 5 full-time teachers and 1 part-time teacher in the school and Nursery. In addition, special needs support is provided every day.
